If you’ve never raised livestock before, chickens make a great place to start. They’re easy to raise, they don’t need a lot of space, and they don’t cost a lot of money to buy or to feed.
Fun Fact: Early chickens didn’t lay many eggs, though, and they made pitifully scrawny meat birds. Over time, chicken keepers selected breeders from those that laid best or grew fastest and developed the most muscle.
How much money you are willing to invest?
The amount of money that you need depends on what kind of chickens you want and how many. Also, how simple or elaborate their housing will be, and whether you already have facilities you can use or modify. Chickens must be protected from wind and harsh weather, but the housing doesn’t need to be fancy. If your yard isn’t fenced, consider putting one up.
They are noisy.
To find the best placement for your chickens’ yard, you must consider whether crowing may bother your neighbors. Males (roosters/cocks) are well known for their inclination to crow at dawn. Cocks occasionally crow during the day, and if you have more than one, they will periodically engage in an impromptu crowing contest. A rooster rarely crows during the night, unless he is disturbed by a sound or a light. If having a rooster is illegal in your area, or the sound of crowing might cause a problem, consider keeping hens without a rooster. But even hen makes a brief sound when leaving the nest after laying an egg. Moreover, without having a rooster, you won’t be able to hatch the eggs your hens lay.
Benefits and Drawbacks
Raising chickens has some downsides. they scratch the ground and dig dust holes, which can be a problem if they get into a bed of newly planted seedlings. Chickens also produce plenty of droppings that, if not properly managed, will smell bad and attract flies. Until you raise your own chicks, it may look weird to believe that people become attached to their chickens and it becomes hard for them to let them.
the benefits of raising chickens are far beyond the downside. Chickens will provide you family with fresh eggs and good meat, and you can feel proud that the food on your table lives under your awesome conditions.
Important note: Before you start your own chicken farm, make sure that everyone that lives with you has any chicks related allergy. You can find this by visiting a poultry show or someone that you know who has chickens.
